Filming In Brooklyn is very lucky to have as a regular reader Nathan, a location manager for film productions. Not long ago he left a very informative comment about the cops who work on NYC location shoots, and he’s expanded on that comment on his own blog, Polybloggimous.
From Nathan’s post:
Regardless of what they’ve been called or which division they’re under, their services have always been free… Everywhere else I shoot, I either hire off-duty officers or reimburse the city for the officers’ time. Guess what? When I’m paying for a police officer to be there, I expect him to do pretty much anything I want him to.

I’m pretty sure that the way the law is written, they’re not allowed to do any moonlighting as a cop…including being extras or actors.
