Stunt car loses control in Times Square

Sorcerer’s Apprentice crash

I just posted over on examiner.com about the Sorcerer’s Apprentice stunt car that lost control yesterday in Times Square, injuring two pedestrians.  I’ve watched the amateur video a bunch of times (it’s posted on examiner.com), and given what was happening, I still can’t believe that people were allowed to walk on the sidewalk next to the action.

I’ve been on over a hundred movie and TV sets, and people are almost never allowed to walk down the sidewalk as a scene is being shot.  This is usually for the sake of the picture, though, not safety.  I’m curious whether or not the producers of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice tried to get permission to shut down that stretch of Seventh Avenue to pedestrians or not.  The street was closed to vehicular traffic only, so either the producers wanted the camera to capture the crowds without having to pay extras, or the city decided that closing Times Square to pedestrian traffic would be too much of a hassle.  Either way, I’m sure the guidelines will be revisited now.

Holy Crap! That is unbelievable. You’re right about people never being allowed to walk near while scenes are being shot, & it’s unfathomable that it would be allowed when such a dangerous scene was being filmed. Add the rain soaked streets, this could have been much worse. Thank God there weren’t any other people nearby, & that the 2 people weren’t hurt any worse! I too would love to know whose decision it was not to close the sidewalks.
I wonder how long it will take before the first lawsuits are filed. I’m not a litigious person, but I think in this case it’s warranted.
btw Amy, if you google stunt car loses control in Times Square, this post is the 2nd listing! yeah FIB! ;-)

If you think that’s unbelievable, there was another crash three blocks from the scene of this crash, and nine people were injured, including some production members. Reading about it now…

Saw that yesterday on Christine’s site. That didn’t seem to be related to the filming though, a cab & a regular person trying to avoid the cab. Seems like it’s just coincidence that it happened @ their filming, & that crew members were injured. People are saying the movie is cursed. ;-)

Yeah, the article that I read said that it was God’s way of telling Nic Cage to stop making movies. :-)
